Some of you know I’ve been battling some chronic pain issues, so I haven’t been terribly “in touch.” I apologise for that. FYI, I am working on a new Superior Mystery – I’m about 20% into it.
In the meantime, tomorrow and Friday (April 19-20), you can introduce your friends and family to Jonah and the gang for FREE!
(If you live across the dateline, in Australia, New Zealand, East Asia, etc., it will be April 20-21 for you).
You can share this post, put it on social media, send it emails, whatever. Here’s the link:
I don’t say it enough, but I think it all the time: You people are awesome. There never would have been a Superior Mystery Series without your encouragement. Thank you.
All the best,
I’m sure some of you have wondered what has happened to me. Others probably don’t even remember me, it’s been so long. In fact I bet some of you are looking at this in your email program, thinking, “Who is this from? Why am I getting this?”
[To answer that: at some point, you signed up to follow this, my blog. You probably enjoyed reading one of my Lake Superior Mysteries, and in a moment of weakness, decided to follow my blog. I would surely love it if you would continue to follow it. Do any of these books ring a bell?]
The bad news is, something indeed has “happened” to me. I’ve had a number of health struggles over the past few years. The good news, I don’t appear to be dying any faster than everyone else – I just have a bit more pain in my body than the average Joe.
Anyway, this is to let you know that I’m going to be a bit more active in blogging, and in social media in general. To that effect, I have revamped my website (even though I don’t remember “vamping” it in the first place….) and I would like to move my blogging apparatus so that it’s integrated to the new website. I don’t believe there is anything you need to do. Just be aware that your “membership” here is going to be shifted over there (“there” being http://www.tomhilpert.com). Your information isn’t being sold, or traded, or whatever. You’re just getting put in boxes, and moved to my new house, and haphazardly unpacked. Have no fear: you will still get the same high-quality mindless blather that you’ve come to expect from me.
See you soon!
My first mystery, Superior Justice is on sale for $0.99 today only! Once you’ve read that, you won’t want to miss out on the other two, [which are priced normally, so that I can buy my kids some Christmas presents 😉 ]

I am very excited to let all of you know that my lovely and talented wife is about to release her first music album in more than ten years. If you like some of the music that Jonah Borden listens to, you will like Kari Hilpert. Of course, Jonah has a wide range of tastes. Kari falls into the singer/songwriter category, with a unique, hopeful, inspiring voice. Her songs are deep, often thoughtful, and her whole style is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Patty Griffin and other singer/songwriter types. Steely Dan, she is not.
Jonah Borden aside, Kari Hilpert is MY favorite musician, by far
There are three free songs available for download here, and three more you can you listen to on her website, here. You can pre-order the album on iTunes here, or on Amazon, here. The actual release date is October 1st. If you pre-order, rather than wait, it will actually help her ratings once it is released.
Go on, get out of here, and go get you some music!
The connection between authors and readers is even more important today than in times past. We need the help of our readers!
Last month I put together a brief survey to find out how people discover new books and authors. One of the biggest challenges new authors are facing, is getting the word out about their work, regardless of whether they are self-published or going with a traditional publisher. Increasingly, authors have to do a significant amount of legwork in terms of promotion as marketing and advertising budgets are widely slashed.
However, most self-published authors don’t have a particularly detailed understanding of their market. Either they haven’t thought to find out, or simply don’t know where to start. It’s understandable – we didn’t get into writing in order to become expert marketers – but it is something that we just have to get to grips with. So I thought I’d start my own journey towards understanding by asking people where they find out about new books and authors.
Question 1: What genres…

In case you are new, here’s the skinny:
It’s wintertime on the North Shore and the snow is thick on the ground. Jonah Borden, the coffee-guzzling, wisecracking, mystery-solving man of the cloth, is about to tie the knot with his sweetheart, Leyla Bennett. But just a few weeks before they do, Leyla decides to go undercover in a new cult to get an exclusive exposé which would make her name as a journalist. However, as time goes on, Borden is worried that her commitment to the troubling new religion and her devotion to its evil, charismatic leader are more than just professional.
When Borden confronts the cult leader, he is turned away and threatened. Meanwhile, mysterious hunting accidents begin happening around the town of Grand Lake. Assisted by his friends, Jonah tries to find a way to get Leyla out. What he uncovers is bigger than any of them had guessed. Now, he’s in a race to save his own life, and those of his friends, before a powerful enemy finds them and destroys them.
Superior Secrets is set amidst the wild beauty of Lake Superior. Featuring a cast of unique, memorable characters, this is part of the Lake Superior Mystery series. None of the books have to be read in order.
Tom Hilpert writes character-driven mysteries with humor and flair. He loves cats, as well as dogs, and is kind to little children. Go to http://www.tomhilpert.com for more information, or “like” his Facebook Author page.
SUPERIOR SECRETS is almost ready! As you can see, we have a cover!
As we put the finishing touches together, I am reminded again of the need for a killer book description to lure in new readers. Here’s what we have for Superior Secrets:
It’s wintertime on the North Shore and the snow is thick on the ground. Jonah Borden, the coffee-guzzling, wisecracking, gourmet-cooking man of the cloth, is about to tie the knot with his sweetheart, Leyla Bennett. But before they do, Leyla joins a cult, ostensibly in order to complete an investigative report. However, Borden is worried: there are signs that her commitment to the new religion may have become more serious.
When Borden confronts the cult leader, he is rebuffed. Meanwhile, mysterious hunting accidents begin happening around the town of Grand Lake. Assisted by his friends, Jonah tries to find a way to get Leyla out. What he uncovers is bigger than any of them had guessed. Now, he’s in a race to save his own life, and those of his friends, before a powerful enemy snuffs them out.
Superior Secrets is set amidst the wild beauty of Lake Superior. Featuring a cast of unique, memorable characters, this is part of the Lake Superior Mystery series, but none of the books have to be read in order.
I could use a little help here. I’m wondering if there are any of you, who have not read any of previous Lake Superior Mysteries, who could evaluate this description for me? If you haven’t read the books, does this description get your attention? Does it tell you enough? Does it say too much? I deeply appreciate your feedback!
If you have read any of the previous books, I welcome your feedback too, but try to be objective: would this description interest you if you knew nothing about the series?
Thanks so much!

A lot of people like to complain about Amazon, just because it is dominating the marketplace. As an author, however, my objective assessment is that Amazon dominates because Amazon “gets it.” They do a lot of things right, and they are constantly seeking ways to improve.
Barnes & Noble offers me nothing for marketing my books. They say, “put your book on B&N, and start selling to millions of readers.” Only, I can’t really sell to millions of readers, because they don’t offer me anyway to promote it – not even paid promotions.Kobo, and other sites are similar. I recently contacted Scribd as well. The startling thing is that these companies will return my emails, and admit, in print, that they have nothing to offer to help me.
On the other hand, Amazon, as I say, “gets it.” They’ve been offering free promotions for a year or two now. Basically, I trade books (at no cost to myself) for publicity. In other words, I’m buying advertising through barter, which is a pretty cool deal, and it has worked quite well over this past year. I’ve made a nice part time income, and Amazon has made a nice part-time income off me. If there are just a few hundred other independent authors doing as well as I am, Amazon is making millions from us (collectively), while B&N and others simply ignore that money. No wonder Amazon is dominating.
And they came doing what they can to help me, because they understand that helps themselves. In the past two months, they’ve added two new marketing tools. Now, if you buy a hard copy of my book, you can also get the ebook for just $0.99 extra. And, starting TODAY, we’re running a new kind of promotion on Superior Storm. If you buy the Kindle edition today or tomorrow, it will be just $0.99. After that it, the price goes up a little bit for two days, and then again moves up. On the sixth day, we’ll be back to full price. I’m excited to see how it works.
If you’re looking for a fun read, check it out, and pass it on to friends and family!
